DAY 2 — An extraordinary visit to the phenomenal ice caves
On your very second day in this beautiful place, your East Greenland adventure starts right after a delicious breakfast.
We will accompany you to the harbour, and together we will go by boat to the astonishing Aputsiaq Glacier nearby.
Upon arrival at the glacier, you will get careful instructions on safety and on the gear, before we begin our walk up to the ice cave. The ice cave itself is 40 m deep and it has the most amazing blue and green hues. It feels like you are walking into a magical portal.
After approximately 2 hours of hiking and exploring, we arrive back at the boat. We will the sail to Tasiilaq - the main town on the East coast of Greenland. It is the most charming place with about 2,000 inhabitants.
On our way there, we will pass by the spectacular icebergs on either side of the boat. This experience is — in itself — breathtaking and a once in a lifetime vision.
When we arrive in Tasiilaq, you will be taken to your guesthouse which will be your home for the coming 4 nights. We will finish this day with a nice dinner with the other participants and a joined information meeting.
DAY 3 — The astounding Knud Rasmussen Glacier and a visit back to the past
Today’s excursion begins from the Tasiilaq harbour. We will head north-west into the broad Ammassalik Fjord. After about an hour of sailing, we will set course into the more narrow and steep fjords. Here, you will be able to enjoy the breathtaking landscape of the majestic mountain peaks surrounding us.
First, we will make a stop at Ikateq — an amazing glimpse into the past. From here, the United States ran an airfield from 1942-47 and the area was given the code-name Bluie East Two (BE-2) during wartime. It was originally built in order to facilitate transatlantic air traffic, navigation, search-and-rescue operations and weather forecasts. You can still see many of the remnants from World War II such as the airfield, rusted fuel drums, vehicles and ruins.
Our journey then continues further north-east until we reach the magnificent Sermiligaaq Fjord. From Greenlandic this is translated into the English The Beautiful Glacier Fjord — a name this body of water most certainly deserves. At a specific point, you will be able to experience the amazing view of two calving glaciers simultaneously — Karale Glacier on your left side, and Knud Rasmussen Glacier right ahead of you. We will get as close to the Knud Rasmussen Glacier as the situation allows us, and then to go ashore to enjoy our lunch on the riverbank. After about 1-2 hours of taking in the area, we will head back to Tasiilaq.
Duration: 7-8 hours in total. Lunch, warm drinks and refreshments are included.
Requirements: Warm clothes, down comforter available if needed.
DAY 4 — Charming Tiniteqilaaq and the great Sermilik Icefjord
For this trip, we again start our adventure from the Tasiilaq harbour. We navigate north along the Ammassalik Island trough a truly awe-inspiring landscape where floating ice sculptures pass by us.
After 1 – 2 hours of enjoying this watery art exhibition, we will arrive in a small settlement called Tiniteqilaaq — which translated from Greenlandic means the strait that runs dry at low tide. The settlement is tiny and just 113 people lived here permanently (counted in January 2015). However, the town has the most spectacular view of the Sermilik Icefjord. You will be able to see the colossal icebergs, and on the horizon, the Greenland Ice Shield touches the sky — a sight that simply must be experienced. There will be time for you to stroll around the settlement and explore on your own.
Thereafter, we will continue down to the Sermilik Fjord and enjoy our lunch somewhere with a view of the gigantic icebergs. And then, we will head south and sail around the Ammassalik Island passing even more amazing icebergs on our way, before we return to Tasiilaq.
Duration: 7-8 hours in total. Lunch, warm drinks and refreshments are included.
Requirements: Warm clothes, down comforter available if needed.
DAY 5 — Enjoying Tasiilaq and the Flower Valley
On your last full day in Tasiilaq, you have the morning free to enjoy whatever you feel like. We meet up at 1 PM for a joined walk through the city and to the Flower Valley. The city walk will take us to a workshop where local artists make their renowned and beautiful handicraft. We will then continue towards the harbour and visit the museum located in the old church built in 1903. The museum has many historical treasures, and you can learn about the life and history of East Greenland.
We will then proceed along the shore to the hospital and up to the new church. Above this church, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the town. In this area, you will also be able to see the oldest houses in town where the first colony manager Johann Pedersen and the polar explorer Ejnar Mikkelsen lived.
Before heading to the Flower Valley, you can visit the tourist office Skæven. Here you will be able to invest in all kinds of amazing handicrafts, maps, and much more. The valley itself — as the name indicates — is full of many different flowers. You can find arctic thyme, arctic bluebell, arctic dandelion, the Greenlandic national flower broad-leafed willow herb, and many others.
We then continue down the small curved path along the river for a few kilometers, until we reach a small waterfall. We will set aside time to enjoy the peacefulness of this beautiful landscape, before we finally head back to Tasiilaq.
Duration: The morning is yours. The joined city & Flower Valley walk from 1 PM — 2-3 hours in total.
Requirements: The citywalk is easy. However, we recommend sturdy shoes for the walk in the Flower Valley. We recommend you to bring some refreshments with you.
DAY 6 — Goodbye for now East Greenland
On your sixth day, it is time to say goodbye for now. In the morning, you will go by boat for your transfer back to Kulusuk airport.
NB: The itinerary can be subject to change in the order of the excursions. The content of the tour will remain the same.
