KUUMMIUT

Kuummiut

A time pocket in the middle of East Greenland’s majestic essence

The largest settlement in Ammassalik Kuummiut, is located deep in the Ammassalik fjord at the crossing of 3 fjords. This attractive settlement, is positioned approximately 60 km northeast of Tasiilaq, and is characterised by its breathtaking view down the fjord into the oceanic Denmark Strait. Kuummiut is famous for hosting the only fishing factory in the district, and fishing as well as hunting are the main means for income for the locals.
Every year, in early summer the Greenlandic cuisine fish — the ammassat — arrives in huge shoals to the spawning grounds near Kuummiut. The small fish is caught in nets from boats or the beach by the local fishermen.

Historically, Kuummiut was established as a mission station in 1915. The famous East Greenlandic artist and teacher Karale Andreassen was born in Kuummiut in 1890 as the son to the Inuit’s spiritual leader — the Shaman Mitsivarniánga. In 1965, the population of the now abandoned settlement Skjoldungen moved to Kuummiut and in an instance, the population in the settlement increased with 100 people. In present days, Kuummiut has approximately 400 inhabitants and is the third largest settlement in Greenland.

Kuummiut is an ideal starting point for fishing, trekking, and kayak tours. The mountains are higher and steeper in this area and reach an astounding 2000 m. East Greenland is generally famous for its spectacular mountains, and in the area around Kuummiut, you will get a glimpse of some of the most majestic peaks.

Whether you wish to plan trekking trips that last a couple of days or a few weeks, we can accommodate it to fit your schedule and experience. If your time is sparse or your group is less experienced, you can still experience the marvellous highlights of the area by combining trekking with local boat transfers.

For those interested in higher peaks, the Tasiilaq Mountain Hut is a great base for exploring peaks and glaciers. The hut — which is open from April — is located approximately 40 km north of Kuummiut at the staggering altitude of 700 metres. This hut sleeps 8-10 people, and is fully equipped.

Arctic Dream Kuummiut

Our cabin in Kuummiut is a small original 50 m² house designed with a living room, a kitchen and a bedroom with an upper and lower bed. The house sleeps a total of 8 people.

The toilet facilities are made up of a combustion toilet. Water for drinking and cooking needs to be picked up in a canister from a small water tab 100 m from the house. If you need a shower, you may go to the town’s servicehouse, witch is the only house with running water in the settlement.
