A meeting with mighty icebergs and enchanting ice caves
For this amazing trip, we start our adventure at the Tasiilaq harbour. We will journey through the Kong Oscar Fjord and from here we enter the vast open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. A huge number of massive icebergs — all unique in different shapes and sizes — will pass us by and occasionally, we may also encounter the incredible humpback, minke, and fin whales in the area. These three whale species all feed on the billions of small fish in the waters along the coastline.
After these unforgettable sightings, we continue to the Aputsiaq Glacier, wherefrom we will begin our ice cave experience. Initially, our glacier guide will teach us the safety skills, we need for this part of the trip. We then proceed on the 20-minute walk on to the glacier in order for us to enter a completely new and stunning world in the ice cave. Prepare to be blown away by this exceptional and almost other-worldly experience — it is truly extraordinary. Lastly, after leaving the ice cave, we will return to Tasiilaq.
If you wish, it is possible to expand this trip with a combination of a visit to the large icebergs and a 40 m deep ice cave experience not too far away.
Duration: 3-4 hours. Beverages (coffee, tea, softdrinks), refreshments and a highly trained glacier guide are included. helmet and climbing iron (Steigeisen) for your boots.
Requirements: Warm clothes,
The majestic Knud Rasmussen glacier and a glimpse of Ikateq history
This journey begins in the Tasillaq harbour, and from here we will head northwest into the broad Ammassalik Fjord. After enjoying the trip along the fjord for about an hour, we will move into the narrow and steep fjords where we will be surrounded by views of the breathtaking mountain peaks.
From 1942 to 1947, the United States ran an airbase in the area northwest of Tasiilaq. During World War II, this military airfield’s wartime code-name was Bluie East Two (BE-2). The purpose of the base was to facilitate navigation, search-and rescue operations, weather forecasts and transatlantic air traffic. Today, this place — with its peculiar remnants from the war — is known as Ikateq.
The entire area presents with scatterings of rusted fuel drums, broken down vehicles and windswept ruins, which makes it an interesting and contrast-filled location to visit. In recent years, it has occasionally been made a political issue to clean the place up. In 2017, an agreement between the Danish and Greenlandic governments was reached and the project was planned to start during the summer of 2019.
We will make a stop at this unusual and perplexing airbase, and you will get a chance to walk among authentic remains and scrap dating back to World War II.
As our journey continues further northeast, we will arrive in Sermiligaaq Fjord. Translated from Greenlandic this body of water means The Beautiful Glacier Fjord — a name it more than lives up to. All around us, majestic jagged mountain peaks will frame our view, and the astonishing meeting between water, ice and earth will take your breath away.
At a certain point, you will even be able to get two calving glaciers in your view simultaneously — the Karale Glacier on the left and the Knud Rasmussen Glacier straight ahead. Our boat will cruise as close to the Knud Rasmussen Glacier as possible. Furthermore, we will go ashore and enjoy our lunch with perhaps the most incredible view in the world.
If the time allows for it, you will have 1-2 hours on your own to explore and appreciate the area, before we again board the boat and return to Tasiilaq.
Duration: 7-8 hours. Lunch, warm drinks and refreshments included.
Requirements: Warm clothes, down comforter available if needed.
Stunning ice sculptures and endearing Tinit
This journey sets off from the Tasiilaq harbour, and from here we will head north through a breathtaking landscape along the Ammassalik Island. We will encounter floating ice that resembles beautiful sculptures, and you will be able to enjoy the mesmerising landscape as we pass by it.
After a couple of hours, we arrive at the settlement Tiniteqilaaq — more commonly known as Tinit which from Greenlandic translates to “the strait that runs dry at low tide”. This settlement is small and humble and according to the Greenland statistics, only 113 people live in Tinite (as of January 1, 2015).
Tinit has a unique and spectacular view of the Sermilik Fjord which — when translated from Greenlandic — literally means “icefjord”. From here, you will have the perfect point of view towards the colossal icebergs against the horizon as well as of the site in which the Greenland ice sheet touches the sky — an absolute magnificent sight.
On the edge of the village, we will enjoy our lunch overlooking the Sermilik Fjord and the variety of artful icebergs floating by. If time allows for it, you may even have the opportunity to take a stroll through the settlement. After our visit in Tinit, we continue our journey along the Ammassalik Island and return to Tasiilaq.
Duration: 7-8 hours. Lunch, warm drinks and refreshments are included.
Requirements: Warm clothes, down comforters are available if needed.
A visit to nature’s
icy art museum
We take our starting point from the Tasiilaq harbour and cruise down the southern part of Ammassalik Island. We then head into the Sermilik Fjord which — when translated from Greenlandic — literally means “icefjord” where monumental icebergs will pass us by. A very humbling and profound experience that leaves you feeling like a tiny speck in a massive wonderful universe.
Soon after, we arrive at the abandoned settlement Ikkatteq, where we will go ashore. Once on solid ground, you can explore the old church and the school building as well as enjoy the gorgeous view from the hillside.
After this delightful pause on land, we return to the boat and move north towards the Johann Pedersen Fjord. Prepare to be touched deeply by the magical landscape which almost resembles nature’s art museum.
The sculptural chunks of ice float around us, and the steep outlet glaciers that gracefully dive down from the eternal Greenland ice sheet into the fjord will amaze you. We go ashore at the Hann Glacier — an actual calving glacier — where we will enjoy our lunch overlooking the front of the awe-inspiring glacier.
There will also be time for you to hike to the ice and explore the area. After about 2 hours in this incredible environment, we return to the boat and head back to Tasiilaq.
Duration: 7-8 hours. Lunch, warm drinks and refreshments are included.
Requirements: Warm clothes, down comforters are available if needed.
A visit to the mythical Isortoq and the ice cap
Our tour starts in Tasiilaq harbour from where we cruise around the southern part of Ammassalik Island. We then cross over the Atlantic sea and enter the fjord going south to the tiny settlement Isortoq. Isortoq translates from Greenlandic to “the misty sea”, and an old saying proposes that the place got its name from the fact that, the sea was so foggy that a kayaker could not see his paddle, when he dipped it into the ocean.
Today, it is estimated that Isortoq only has 30 inhabitants left. However, the landscape is absolutely magical with sculptural ice blocks in the fjord slowly sliding by the coastline. Additionally, you will witness precipitous outlet glaciers dive down from the eternal Greenland ice sheet calving into the fjord beneath.
We make a stop next to the glacier and go ashore. Once on solid ground, we can commence the 30 minute hike towards a small hut on the icecap. Here, we will not only enjoy our lunch, but also the breathtaking view. After the lunch break, we will once again head back to the boat, and then we will find the time to visit Isortoq. After about 1 hour, we will sail back to Tasiilaq.
Duration: 7-8 hours. Lunch, warm drinks and refreshments are included.
Requirements: Warm clothes, down comforters are available if needed.
