DAY 1 — Arrival and settling in

You will arrive by plane at the Kulusuk airport — also known as the gateway to East Greenland — and from here, you board a helicopter that takes you the last distance across the might Ammassalik fjord to the main town of Tasiilaq. After settling in to your accommodation, you have the rest of the day at your leisure. We recommend exploring Tasiilaq — the largest town on the east coast — with approximately 2,000 inhabitants.

In the evening, we will join each other for lovely dinner prepared by a skilled local chef at your accommodation. We will also take this opportunity to host a welcome meeting, were you will be briefed on the days ahead. We will discuss rental equipment and make sure that you are all set for the trip, and there will naturally be time for any further questions, you may have.

Accommodation: You will be lodged in a house in the centre of Tasiilaq. The house sleeps two people in single beds per room. Furthermore, the house has a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with both a shower and a flushing toilet.

DAY 2 — Dog sledging through the stunning landscapes to the Sermilik Icefjord

At 9 a.m., we meet the mushers and start preparing the dogs and the sledges. The dogsled will then take us over Kong Oscars fjord, and continue up to the large inland lake of Qordlortoq. Here, we will have a short break to enjoy the majestic scenery, and allow for all dog sledge teams to gather together for the continuation of the journey. Once together, we continue our adventure through the mountain valleys, until we arrive at three little huts humbly nestled in the valley — known by the locals as Kaffebaren. Here, we will again take a short break and enjoy some delicious refreshments.

Once rested, we continue our journey and climb to an altitude of 500 meters above sea level. The views from this height are breathtaking and absolutely spectacular, and you can enjoy beautiful vistas of the second largest fjord in Greenland — the majestic Sermilik Icefjord. We then start our descent through a narrow path made by a frozen stream that leads us to our overnight stop at the edge of the ice fjord.

Accommodation: You will be lodged in a basic, but very charming mountain hut. We will be sleeping in sleeping bags, and the toilet facilities consist of an ‘outhouse’. Please note that the hut has no shower.

DAY 3 — A day of tranquility and slow living

On the third day, you will have the entire day off to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the hut just as you please. You may choose to simply relax and enjoy the peaceful serenity of the area, or you may join our experienced guide on a snowshoe hike up the fjeld and lower mountains close by for more spectacular views. From our setting, on the edge of the fjord we can enjoy a panorama of the ice sheet in the distance. If the night is clear, we might be lucky enough to catch the dancing aurora borealis above us.

Accommodation: We will spend the night at the same accommodation as the night before.

DAY 4 — Towards Tiniteqilaq and the local cuisine

After breakfast, we prepare the dogs and the sledges and continue our journey towards the small settlement of Tiniteqilaq. This day’s endeavour is hard work ascending and descending step fells with the sledges. We will traverse the length of the Tinit glacier which will provide us with amazing views of the iceberg filled fjord, the ice sheet, and the small settlement of Tiniteqilaq in the far distance. During our journey, we will make multiple stops that frees up time for capturing photos and enjoying refreshments.

We spend the night in a newly built mountain hut at the edge of the settlement. If the weather and the conditions of the sea ice allows for it, you will have the opportunity to join one of the local hunters on an afternoon boat ride on the fjord. Here, you can explore the icebergs up close and maybe even witness the locals hunt seals. In the evening, you will enjoy dinner with a local family — a menu that usually consists of seal and whale meat.

Accommodation: The newly built hut has wooden beds with proper comfortable mattresses, and the sleeping arrangements are on sleeping bag basis. You will have the option to take a shower in the local service house.

DAY 5 — Across glaciers, frozen lakes and fjords towards Qernetivartivit

On the fifth day, we leave the settlement of Tiniteqilaq behind and continue up the 10 kilometer long Kugarmit valley. We will pass numerous large glaciers and cross several frozen lakes in order for us to find our way to the end of the valley, where we will descend steep slopes before finally arriving at the Imaila fjord. We then continue on the frozen fjord towards the closed settlement of Qernetivartivit, where we will find our hut for the night. If time allows for it, we can bring out our fishing rods and try our luck fishing for Greenlandic halibut and redfish.

Accomodation: The Imaila hut is a very basic mountain hut in an incredible setting by the sea ice. We will spend the night in sleeping bags. The hut has an outdoor toilet, but there are no shower facilities.

DAY 6 — Conquering steep terrain and the return to Tasiilaq

Our final day takes us back to the town of Tasiilaq. The journey crosses high glaciers which is a hard job for both men and dogs. Approximately 4-5 hours after our departure in the morning, we will yet again set sights on Tasiilaq. That evening, we all come together for dinner prepared by a skilled local chef at our accommodation.

Accomodation: You will again be staying in the house in the centre of Tasiilaq just at you did prior to the start of the trip, and you will once again be able to enjoy all modern facilities for your comfort.

DAY 7 — Taking in the town of Tasiilaq

Today, your will have the day at your own leisure and can again enjoy the sights of Tasiilaq. We recommend that you explore the town museum where you can learn more about the local culture, and the church is also worth a visit.

Accomodation: You will be staying in the same house as the night before.
