LEARN TO BECOME A DOG SLED MUSHER
This trip is offered as an “add on” trip for people that are booked on our longer sled dog tours.
DAY TO DAY ITINERARY
On this first day you will be introduced to the dogs and familiarise yourself with all the aspects of driving your own team of dogs. We will tell you about the history of dogsledding in East Greenland and the specifics of how dogs are driven in East Greenland. You will learn how to harness the dogs and prepare the sled and all additional equipment that is necessary.
You will learn about the composition of a dog team and the importance of getting dogs in combinations which allows them to work the best together and avoid fights. Greenlandic dogs are very strong both physically and mentally and therefore the importance of the right composition of the team is paramount.
Once on the sled we will teach you how to get the dogs to work with you in harmony. To achieve this, you will learn an array of commands in Greenlandic that the dogs will respond to. We will also the teach you the importance and role of mastering the wip and the sled breaks.
Throughout the first day you will practice your driving skills with an experienced musher by your side and you will progressively become more and more confident in working together with the dogs. The aim for the day is for you to become confident to handle the dogs on your own, albeit under the close eye of an experienced musher.
To finish the day, you will feed the dogs.
Today you will use all the knowledge and skills that you gained yesterday to independently become a musher of your own sled and team of dogs. You will be given the opportunity to mush the team of dogs throughout the surroundings of Tasiilaq, with the support of mushers travelling close to you on snowmobile for saftey, should you require assistance at any time.
At the end of a successful day, you will be able to call yourself a musher of a team of 6 Greenlandic sled dogs!
