EVENING WHALE WATCHING AND ICEBERG TOUR
This tour is only available August throughout October as throughout the other months of the year the sea ice prevents us from running the tour.
In the early afternoon we leave the harbour of Tasiilaq behind and sail through the beautiful King Oscar’s fjord south to reach the open ocean to the south of Ammassalik Island. On our way we will sail past several majestic icebergs which are scattered in the fjord and its outlet to the ocean.
Once we reach the open sea we are starting our look out for whales. In the area we frequently spot Humpback, Minkie and Fin whales. Occationally we also have the luck to spot Orca whales (also known as killer whales).
The reason that the whales are found in the area is that during the month of August, small salmon fish called capelins are spawning in the Kuummiut fjord and this provides an excellent food source for the whales that come in to feed at this time. The Orcas follow as the young whale calves are easy prey and an excellent source of food.
We will sail around this area, sighting the whales as the sun is setting over the island before starting our return journey back to Tasiilaq in the evening.
