THE KUUMIUT & APUSIAAJIK GLACIER TOUR

DAY ITINERARY

The trip begins in the morning from Tasiilaq where we set off from the harbour in one of our comfortable tourist boats. We make our ways on the sea towards King Oskar’s fjord and head north towards the picturesque glacier front of Apusiaajik. Should luck be on our side, you may witness the birth of an iceberg. Known as glacier calving, tension in the glacier makes huge chunks of ice which break off the front of the glacier whereby icebergs are formed.

From here the skipper will navigate the boat to the nearby fishing and hunting settlement of Kuummiit. Once we arrive you will have time to explore the settlement on your own. Kummiit is Greenlandic for “The people who lives by the river”. According to Greenland Statistics, there are 309 people permanently living in the settlement. The majority being local fishermen and hunters.

Once you have gained a good insight of life in a remote East Greenlandic settlement, its again time for us to continue our journey. Now we will travel north east up a narrow fjord called “Ikaasaulaq” with its step walls towing high above to both left and right of the boat. You will enjoy a fantastic view of the fjord and its surroundings, where jagged mountain peaks rise high up into the sky, and accompanied by narrow valley glaciers.

Far into the valley we will go a shore, at the side of the calving Apuseeajik glacier. Now finding ourselves in an alpine looking landscape, we will enjoy a light lunch which we have brought with us.

After lunch we will have some time to explore the nearby area by foot, before we set the course towards Tasiilaq where we will be arriving in the afternoon
